A short trip To Shantiniketan

A weekend Trip To Shantiniketan:

Shantiniketan is well connected to Kolkata via road and railways. The nearest station is Bolpur. One can take Viswabharati Fast Passenger or Rampurhat Express from Howrah to reach Bolpur.

Via road, it takes about 4 hours to reach Shantiniketan if you follow Durgapur Express way.

Day 1 : Keep your luggage in a hotel and start your tour from Viswabharati. In Uttrarayan there is a museum where you will find the different accessories used by Rabindranath Tagore. Just opposite to Uttarayan you will find the Campus for Kola Bhaban, Sangeet Bhaban, Amra Kunja.  You can also see the sculptures of Ramkinkar Baij the eminent sculptor.

Shantiniketan, Boul, Ektara

Boul Song

Here and there you will find “Bouls” playing their musical instrument with a single cord (Ektara) and singing Boul Songs where you can find high end philosophical thoughts being said in simple rural language.

Return to your hotel and have your lunch. In the evening follow the canal to reach Khowai. A wonderful example of wind erosion. It’s a steep slope where you can walk down and enjoy the beauty.

Very close to khwai you can find the “Haat” or the weekly market. By the time you will finish roaming the market you will find the sun has turned to a bright red ball and about to take a dip in the red water of the canal. Return to your hotel as there is no street light.

Day 2: Start your journey early in the morning to reach Kankalitola. It is considered among 51 holy places in Hindu mythology.

It is considered that when Lord Shiva was doing the devastating dance (Proloy Nritya) putting the dead body of his wife Sati on his shoulder, Bishnu threw his Chakra and that cut Sati in 51 pieces. Where ever the pieces fell we find there a temple. Kankalitola is one such Pith.
It takes quite a long time to offer puja and as a result by the time you are over with all offerings it will be the time to have lunch.

In the evening take a rickshaw to Kopai. Kopai is a small riverthat flows through Birbhum.

The scenic beauty is awesome. From the Kopai bridge you can only find greenery and the river flows bisecting the village.

Apart from these places you can also visit handicraft centre called “Amar Kutir” and Santhal villages like Boner Pukur.

Next day morning you can take a train and come back to Calcutta by afternoon.
I am sure you will enjoy the weekend tour.

  6. Hi Joy,

Nice to see that you have been also fascinated by the beauty of kopai like me. I just took my liking one step forward & created a small rural resort & named after the Kopai river ( Kopai- The Rural Getaway). It is located on the banks of kopai river, surrounded by the lush paddy fields ( just 10 minutes away from Ballavpur Danga & Amar Kutir). Please visit our website at http://www.kopairesort.com. Hope to see you soon at the Kopai.
